"ISU Architectural Salvage"
Saturday and Sunday, January 28 and 29 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

As part of the 2012 theme, "Some Assembly Required" the Conservatory has a new display called "ISU Architectural Salvage" which highlights keepsakes and treasures from Iowa State University’s rich, architectural past. Explore soft blooms, accented with treasures from several buildings and structures which have found a new home in the warmth of an amazing tropical Conservatory.

Each person who brings in one non-perishable food item will receive free admission to Reiman Gardens. The food will be donated to one of the local food shelters at the end of the weekend. One food item per person required to gain free admittance.

Annie Sloan Chalk Paint

I tried the Annie Sloan Chalk paint on a garage sale find that I found over the summer. I have heard so many great things about the Annie Sloan Chalk paint so I wanted to try it on this cute piece of furniture.

Sorry, I did not take "before" photos of this project.

This was also one of my first time sanding a piece of furniture to give it some wear. I need to practice on a few more items :)!

I applied one coat of Annie Sloan's Paris Grey Chalk paint first then it took two coats of Annie Sloan's White Chalk paint. All coats dried really fast! Once the last coat was dried then I started sanding it to give it the worn look. I recommend you sand in an area where it can get messy or dust can fly. The paint comes off of course like chalk dust.

Once I was done sanding then I wiped the dust off with a damp cloth and let dry. Then I applied Annie Sloan's Clear Wax and rubbed it off. I LOVED the results!

What she does: Repurposes “junk” by creating one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry from rescued vintage and salvage items. Hall began selling her “junk finds” on Ebay in 2005 and created Vintage No. 35 last fall. A stay-at-home mom, Hall was looking for a hobby, as well as a way to make a little money. She not only found a successful business, but also an entire community similarly interested in finding new uses for old items.
“The ones who inspire me are my junkin’ friends who are passionate about rescuing and repurposing their finds so other people can love what would have been thrown out in the trash,” says Hall. “People who purchase my products love the repurposed look and the fact that it is one-of-a-kind. One special order that stands out was a memory necklace I created for a mother who had lost a child.”

A Fun Day At Cherry Street Market

It was an early start to set up for Cherry Street Market yesterday and a chilly one too but it was so much fun! There were so many great vendors with so much great junk!

My booth ready for customers! This was the first time that I brought my junk collection. Many people did not realize that I have sold junk online for more than 6 years and I have only done jewelry for a little over a year. So it was great to show people my fun finds and my repurposed jewelry!

My favorite gas cans! Chippy and galvanized!

Carter Station's Booth - I bought a table from them and I will show you later what I plan to do with it.

I wanted this "Shop" sign. I think this would be great hanging up in a shop.

Display Your Collections

Inexpensive items add up to a powerful statement en masse. Take a look:

Hang skeleton keys from ribbons in windows, use them as pulls on a shade, or group a variety on the wall (you can even display some horizontally with a second nail). Oh how I love keys!

Sew buttons to colorful paper backings and frame them to make little curio cabinets, or string them together into decorative garlands.

When taken out of context, letters — especially when writ large — have a graphic appeal all their own. Stand them upon a mantel or a buffet. Form witty words with smaller blocks, or group multiples of the same letter on a shelf or wall for a study in type style.

There are some fun playing cards out there. Sandwich cards in Lucite frames and group together. Or spread them on top of a coffee table underneath a piece of glass.

Dish Towels

Gather dish towels by color (red and white) or theme (kitchen, vegetables) and pile them in the bathroom in place of hand towels, or assemble a patchwork tablecloth.

Only At The Fair

Things seem to stop around here when it is Fair Time. It cannot get any better than the Iowa State Fair! The food, livestock, historic buildings, traditions and more. I wanted to showcase some of the beauty from the one and only Fair.

Beautiful Monarch from the Butterfly Garden!

It was the 100th Anniversary of the Butter Cow at the Iowa State Fair. There were over 100 decorated cows displayed around the fairgrounds. Of course, this was my favorite because they repurposed junk into something that I wish was for sale. It would look great in my garden!

The Agriculture Building is one of my favorite buildings. I love it when they showcase the floral competitions.

I would have shown you the various food we grazed on during the several days we were there but that would have only made you hungry. So if you have not made it to the Iowa State Fair I would recommend you make plans to visit in 2012. Now since the Fair season is over it is time to get back to repurposing my finds for the upcoming Fall shows.

Hwy. 141 Sale

I had a fantastic time junkin' on the Hwy. 141 today. I went to more than 75 garage sales and scored a carload of great stuff. I did not think there were as many sales today as there has been in the past. Some of my annual favorites were not open today but I still had great success in finding great stuff.

I love pickin' in barns. I was able to get a few old windows just by asking :)!

I just had to take a picture of the this chicken coop and the meat/grocery store below. I would have loved either one of these for a small store and maybe someday I just might have one. Just too bad they are not closer to the city!

This windmill is made from golf clubs. Great way to repurpose old golf clubs!

Friday's Favorite Find

I was super excited about junkin' on Friday. No kids and many places to stop :)! My first garage sale had advertised estate jewelry and antiques. However, when I arrived it was more like a grocery/hardware store. I know many of you have been to a garage sale like that and you just wonder if anyone actually buys anything from them.

I did score several items on Friday such as a vintage chalkboard, vintage oil cans, vintage cameras and a vintage dress form. I already have 2 but why not another one! She was dirty and her blue material had to come off.

Her shoulder needs to be fixed and I might just do some decoupaging with fun material. She is going to look great!

She is already working it by showcasing a necklace of mine!

80/35 Music Festival was great! Blessed with sunny skies, cool breezes, and overall perfect festival weather, the day was great, filled with dazzling headliners, exciting side stage acts, and creative local artists. Vintage No. 35's booth was rocking with some fantastic customers.

I had a great time today at JB Knacker's Junkin' in June event. People came to the event rain or shine and the rain did not dampen anybody's spirits. There was some great junk! Of course, I took some home with me :)!

One year ago I never thought I would be attending shows and people actually buy something that I made. It just took an idea that I had and now I am doing something I really love.

Ru1 Des Moines

This is my display for Ru1 Des Moines' Premier Event last night! What a fun place to have an event with concrete floors and exposed ceilings - it would have been a fun place to live besides work in!

This was a women only registered event and it was fun! You cannot beat free awesome food, cocktails, giveaways and local vendors to shop from!

I just loved the centerpieces! I am not sure what the yellow pom-pom flower was.

Everyone ready for the women to come! They had over 250 women at the event.

It was great to see many new faces and meet some of my Facebook and blog followers! Thank you Iowa Women's Clinic for inviting me to the event!

Multi-paneled mirrors like this piece from Pottery Barn sure look an awful lot like windows anyway, right? For a poor man’s version, why not use the real deal? Take an old window frame that’s crying out for a little face time, and attach small pieces of mirror (or mirrored acrylic) inside the panes. Hang it on your wall, and voilà.

Stained Glass Window

Etsy vendor SemperNova, who rescues and reinvents furniture and home decor items destined for the landfill, had a beauty of an idea: Turn a humble old window frame into a stained-glass showcase.

Jewelry Holder

Michigan crafter Catherine Spencer found a window on the side of the road and turned it into a jewelry holder. She screwed a piece of scrap wood across the bottom to create a little shelf for rings, pins, and odd pieces that can’t be hung up.

Where did my love for vintage campers come from? I am not quite sure. Growing up the first family camper was a 1980's Coleman Pop-Up Camper then we moved to a pull-type Jayco camper with bunk beds (super cool as a child!). Of course, I love all the bells and whistles with the new campers but there is something about the charm of the vintage ones.

Repurpose Crib Springs

My heart started to beat rapidly when I found this piece of junk at Junk Jubilee for $5. Mr. "H" thought I was crazy when I brought it home and told him what I was going to do with it.

After spraying it white and I brought it into my office to hang my completed pieces of jewelry on. My goal is to hang it on the wall. I have also seen people use these as a memo board or to showcase some of your vintage photos.

Office Makeover

The last couple of weeks I have been working on redoing my office. This should have only taken me four days at the most but I have been working on this project since Easter. As you all know if you have small kids it takes more time to finish those projects. My goal with this project was to lighten up the space, organize the space and give me more room to create.

I had a hard time finding white baskets that you see on the shelving. I found the white baskets at KMart for $6.99. This allowed me to hide the movies and misc. junk.

American Pickers

I had the opportunity to stop by Antique Archeology's Shop this weekend. If you are not familiar with that name then I know you have heard of the American Pickers. Mike and Frank were out "picking" for great junk. It was so much fun walking through their store and seeing items that I saw them "pick" on their TV show.

The gray building in the background is a tiny little Shop that holds some of their finds.

I am in love with clocks and if I had the room I could see this is my home. What great wall art!

Junk Jubilee Update

What an exciting weekend it has been! I just wrapped up a 3-day show at Junk Jubilee in Des Moines, IA and what fun it was. This was my first major "junk" show to attend as a vendor and I was thrilled in how it turned it. I enjoyed meeting other great vendors and also the people who came to the show because we all have one thing in common, "we enjoy junk". I was also thrilled to meet so many of you who follow me on facebook and on my blog.

I want to extend a big thank you to Jan and Miccia for putting on such a great event. I did not meet one person who did not enjoy the event and they cannot wait for the next one. It was a great event and looking forward to the 2nd Annual Junk Jubilee!

I was enjoying my temporary work space out in my front porch yesterday. It was 75 degrees outside, the windows were open, kids were playing outside and jazz music was playing on the stereo. The front porch was just an ideal location to spark a little creativity!

Recycle Materials For Your Landscape

The strong desire to be sustainable has led to an increase in the use of recycled materials in landscape design. Salvaging items and using them as part of your landscaping is a great way to lesson your impact on the environment.

Recycled ceiling tins and scrap corrugated metal were used to create this unique fence.

A salvaged window finds new life as a garden mirror.

Vintage ceiling tins were used to create the planters along the wall, while a reclaimed shipping pallet was used to fashion the tree box.

One of the easiest, and perhaps most fun, forms of upcycling for the garden is turning found items into plant containers. This can be as simple as taking an old wheelbarrow or wagon and adding some soil and plants. Other items that can be repurposed into unique landscape planters include coffee cans, toy dump trucks, antique watering cans, old tires, a free-standing bath tub, a drum, or rain gutters.

Stock tanks come in a variety of sizes and shapes. This one was used to create a pond full of thriving aquatic plants. Stock tanks can be found on Craigslist, at farm sales, in your local classifieds or at feed stores.

This funky outdoor bar was created using salvaged corrugated steel.

Getting A Little Crafty

I want to display the number "35" in Vintage no. 35's booth at Junk Jubilee and I just love the moss covered items that I see in boutiques. So I decided that I could cover numbers with moss and save so much money by doing it myself. I started out by cutting large numbers out of a cardboard box.

I found this moss roll at Michael's for $12.99 but if you use your 40% off coupon it is a great deal!

I laid my cut-out numbers on the moss and cut the moss just outside the perimeter so it gave me enough room to fold it up over the edges and glue the moss onto the cardboard.

Here is how the "5" turned out! I am going to hang the numbers with some ribbon. This was such an inexpensive project that had the "wow" effect and it so much fun for spring. You will have to see the finishing touches at Junk Jubilee!

I just had to show everyone these cute bunnies that my mom has made for an upcoming show. She has been very busy! She hand stitches each one using fleece and vintage inspired material. Each of them have a special name and were named by my daughter.

Repurpose Your Filing Cabinet

Who does not have a plain white, black or cream metal filing cabinet in their home or office? I have an ugly cream cabinet and I am looking forward to painting it this spring and jazzing it up. I have seen filing cabinets at garage sales, flea markets and even on the curb. Look at how some people have repurposed the use of a filing cabinet. So think twice before you pass one up at a sale!

If You Are Ever In Kansas City Area....

I had a great girl's weekend in Kansas City and went to a store that is a must to check out if you are in that area. Nell's Hill is now one of my favorite stores for several reasons such as great customer service, friendly staff, wonderful home accent pieces and awesome displays.

I took this picture to show you how great turning books backwards to show the white of the pages. It looks great doesn't it!

I also liked how they used vintage cake plate stands to decorate the table. The store had such great vintage and new items!

Finds Of The Week

I went to my first garage sale yesterday. When I saw that sign "Garage Sale" and quickly went to the bank to get a few dollars to do a little shopping. I was thrilled with what I picked up.

The picture is horrid but I could not pass up the great frame. With a little white paint this will look great hanging up by itself or I might put some wire on it and use it to hang my jewelry.

"Betsy" The Dress Form

I found my 2nd dress form on Craigslist for $25 and was so excited to get her. However, she was missing a stand and therefore she had been laying on the front porch swing for awhile until I took her to a blacksmith shop to get a stand.

This buffet was my grandparent's and it had peeling paint (oil based paint) when I got it several years ago. This past Fall I sanded it down to get the oil based paint off of it and then added a primer. The last thing was to paint the buffet and spray paint the handles black. Just love this piece!

Cheap Vintage Books

I picked up a few cheap vintage books that had rough covers and gave them a cool new look. This is new for me to do and I just loved ripping those covers off. Don't worry I used books that needed a new facelift!

I want to make some journals with the book covers. Another new project for me to try!

For now I displayed the books in a galvanized container.
